Linux links

These are links to some of my favorite Linux related sites.

The Slackware Linux Project

Slackware is one of the oldest Linux distributions out there and my personal favorite. it may not be as popular today as it once was, but it's an excelent distribution that is highly stable, fast and easy to maintain. It's a very no-nonsense distribution that ships software largely as upstream provides it without distro specific patches, doesn't add its own graphical management tools (you should know how to edit a config file and that should be enough) and is very conservative about what software it contains and very concerned about only shipping truly stable versions of the software it does include.
If you want a distribution that doesn't do things behind your back, can run for years, doesn't break when you install updates, is never a problem to custom compile things for, performs great as both a server and personal workstation and is a lot of fun to play with, then Slackware might be for you.

LWN

Linux Weekly News is a news site that provides news and in-depth articles with a Linux and open source focus. The quality of their articles is quite high, in my oppinion. Access to most news and articles is free, but some content is only available to subscribers for the first week after publication (after one week it becomes freely available to all) - subscribing to the for-pay contents is very cheap and well worth the few dollars a year. Their weekly edition covers topics such as security, kernel development, distributions, general development, Linux in the news and commercial and non-commercial announcements related to Linux and open source.

The Linux Documentation Project

This is the place to go for all your Linux documentation needs. You'll find in-depth HOWTO documents, Guides, FAQ's, manual pages and more. In my oppinion, this is the best online collection of Linux documentation and there are very few problems you won't be able to find a solution to by searching through their material. It's nice to learn new things and TLDP makes it easy to feed your brain.

Linux.com

A bit of everything, news, Linux documentation, info about distributions, forums and more.

Linux Help

Lots of help for most things related to Linux.

Linux Online

A nice collection of Linux news, help, book reviews etc etc.

Linux International

Linux International is a world-wide non-profit association of end users who are dedicated to furthering the acceptance and use of Free and Open Source Software.

Woven Goods for Linux

Woven Goods for Linux is a set of Web Pages with information about Linux as well as a Collection of Applications. I include a link to it here mostly for nostalgic reasons - it's quite old and not updated, but back in the day it was a fine resource.

Linux Software Map

The Linux Software Map is a database of many of the packages that have been written for, ported to, or, these days, simply compiled for linux and made available.

freshmeat.net

A huge database of (mostly Open Source) software projects. A great place to look if you are searching for software to do something specific (or if you just want to see what's available).

SourceForge.net

Sourceforge host a great deal of Open Source software projects.
