Great open source games.

I like playing games. Don't we all?
These are some of my favorite open source games.

There are many sites on the net that list huge numbers of open source games, this is not one of them. I only list games that I can personally recommend and have had lots of fun playing.
If you are looking for a larger selection you should check out Wikipedia's list of open source games, The Linux Game Tome, Free Gamer, Open Directory's list of free games or the Games category of the Free Software Directory.

LinCity-NG

LinCity-NG is a fork of the classical Lincity game. It features much improved graphics, improvements in the gameplay, new sounds and much, much more. It's a huge improvement and you'll love it if you like the city building simulation type of game.

Cube

Cube is a 3D First Person Shooter (multiplayer and singleplayer). It features fast paced gameplay, very nice graphics and a stunning 3D engine. It's a fun game in its own right, but is mostly overtaken by Sauerbraten (see below).

Sauerbraten / Cube 2

A fun and fast paced 3D First Person Sooter. It uses the next version of the Cube game engine and is a really great improvement on a already great game. If you like FPS games you really can't aford to give this one a miss.

BZFlag

This is a really addictive game. The graphics may not be world-class, but the gameplay is fun and extremely addictive. It's a multiplayer 3D tank war game where your tank gains special abilities (or penalties) by picking up flags on the battlefield. It features a lot of play modes and many game rule custumization options, resulting in a game that's fun for everyone (once you find the right server to play on).

Pingus

A clone of the classical game Lemmings. It's very well done with great graphics, lots of levels to complete and it's great fun.

Freeciv

A great open source empire building strategy game that is based on human evolution. It can be quite challenging and will provide ours of fun. I've personally spend days with this game and enjoyed it immensely.

Liquid War

Tis is a really unique and original game. It's a wargame were you control an army of thousands that has to eat its way through the opposing forces. Your army behaves a bit like a liquid and follows your cursor, trying to surround and devour your enemy. The gameplay is unique (I certainly have never seen anything like it) and it is quite fun to play, especially against friends - the computer opponent is not too great. Try it out, you are in for a different experience.
