Cryptography - Wikipedia
Wikipedia has a good crypto overview page. It gives you the basics on what crypto is as well as a description of the differences between stream and block ciphers, cryptanalysis etc etc. A good starting point if your crypto knowledge is limited.
Enough With The Rainbow Tables: What You Need To Know About Secure Password Schemes
A very good blog post describing why rainbow tables should not be a real concern to you (if it is, then you need to go back and redesign your password scheeme). Do read it if you are writing an application that manages/stores passwords or something similar.

Interresting little page of links to information about various ciphers, their potential weaknesses and new mathematical methods that may be problematic for some ciphers.
